“Even having seen it, one cannot quite believe it. Such is the artistry of pianist Daniil Trifonov,” marveled the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Trifonov has been wowing Aspen audiences with his mesmerizing concert performances and recitals for several seasons. He now brings his unique interpretive stamp to the Mozart concerto that pianist Alfred Brendel called “one of the great wonders of the world.”
There is certainly much to wonder about regarding the work’s nickname. Long known as the “jeunehomme” or “young man” concerto, the dedicatee was actually Jenamy, the daughter of the Paris Opera ballet master. Although this was discovered long ago, the misspelling still sticks. It made sense that Mozart lavished extreme care into this work for the daughter of his well-connected friend at a time when he was desperately seeking a position outside of Salzburg. The inclusion of a minuet in the last movement may have even been a nod to his dancer friend.
Opening the program is Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, a shimmering depiction of a lustful satyr’s attempted seduction of sleeping nymphs.
Joel Thompson, composer-in-residence at Houston Grand Opera and known for his acclaimed opera The Snowy Day, will be represented by a new work co-comissisoned by AMFS. His first orchestral piece, An Act of Resistance, powerfully and concisely expressed the battle between love and conflict, and was warmly received by the Aspen audience last summer.
Following the success of his first symphony, Schumann almost immediately produced a second one. As with many sequels, it didn’t fare as well. Mendelssohn told his friend that his orchestration was too pedestrian, and ten years later, Schumann reworked it, adding heavier orchestration and further unifying the movements as was his original intention. The improvements gave the symphony an intense forward momentum and cohesiveness, inviting the listener to imagine their own narrative as they listen to this passionate and intriguing work.
Hear the inaugural concert of this summer’s Aspen Chamber Symphony in this wide-ranging program!

Bartók’s First Piano Concerto shocked its first audience in 1927 with its percussive dissonance – especially its tone clusters (chordal pile-ups), inspired by a 1925 encounter with the experimental American composer, Henry Cowell. Syncopation and repeat hammerings of a single note dominate the Allegro moderato. Strings drop out for the subdued central Andante with its Stravinskian ostinato rhythms and snaking woodwind counterpoint. This tips without a break into the Allegro molto finale, which hurtles furiously to an abrupt end. Originally an 1874 solo piano suite, and later transcribed into colourful orchestral creations by Ravel, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by him visiting an exhibition of the works of his late friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann. Preceded and punctuated by ‘Promenades’ depicting Mussorgsky’s own heavy physique as he walks around, its ten character pieces begin with clumsily loping ‘Gnomus,’ believed to evoke a design for a nutcracker with large teeth. Further ‘pictures’ include ‘The Old Castle’ – a medieval troubadour – and ‘The Catacombs,’ whose sombre brass theme is based on the promenades. The climax is a majestic depiction of Hartmann’s bell-turret-topped design for ‘The Great Gate of Kiev.’

Samuel Barber was just 29 in 1939 when he wrote his Violin Concerto. Like the Adagio for Strings which had made him famous the previous year, the concerto sounds more rooted in European Romanticism than in the music of his native America, even down to its cloudless first movement emulating Mendelssohn’s violin concerto by introducing its soloist instantly, and its central movement opening on an exquisite extended oboe solo, as Brahms’s does. The finale is then an urgent perpetuum mobile. Stravinsky was also in his late twenties when, in 1909, Sergei Diaghilev commissioned the ballet, The Firebird. Combining a nineteenth century fairytale poem and a popular Russian fable, it tells of how a prince rescues a princess from an ogre, helped by a magical firebird – and Stravinsky’s glittering score became his breakthrough work, its blend of exoticism and Russian folk style so successful that he thenok worked three concert suites from it.

But even at the turn of the century, great composers were already being drawn across the Atlantic. The story of the ‘demonic barber of Fleet Street’ who became a mass murderer first appeared in 1846 as a penny dreadful entitled The String of Pearls, and has since served as the basis for numerous dramatic and cinematic adaptations. In composing this thriller musical, Sondheim drew inspiration from film soundtracks as well as Richard Wagner’s use of leitmotif. Barrie Kosky stages his vision of this classic musical as a ‘children’s theatre nightmare collage’, revelling in that lust for horror, wavering between disgust and laughter, that has always fascinated audiences.
He mercilessly digs into the question of what humans are capable of when they follow the logic of revenge to the bitter end, and what’s at stake in the process.

Cannibalism has featured in myths and fairy tales since antiquity: Chronos eats his children, Titus Andronicus bakes his dead enemies into pies, and the wicked witch intends to eat Hansel for dinner.

James Gaffigan conducts a Franco-Spanish program that begins with Franck’s fascinating symphonic poem Le Chasseur maudit followed by the Spanish premiere of Ciudad sin sueño, commissioned by Les Arts from the Valencian composer Francisco Coll. Forged as a fantasy for piano and orchestra, written especially for the soloist of this concert, Javier Perianes, takes its title from Lorca’s homonymous poem that belongs to Poeta en Nueva York and is inspired by flamenco musical material, such as he had already done Coll a Turia or Four Iberian Miniatures. In the second part, dedicated to Ravel, Perianes interprets the Piano Concerto, brilliant music, “without depth”, as the composer quipped, with some reminiscence of the world of jazz and demanding virtuosity for the soloist in the final movement. After the concert, an apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, served by the most performed and resplendent piece of the French composer, La Valse.

The melodies of Jewish Klezmer music are both lively and heart-rending, making a perfect start to the new year—of that, we can be certain. And Mahler too. Oh yes, Mahler is actually klezmer! After all, the musical language of this Bohemian-born Jewish composer is deeply rooted in the folk-music traditions of his homeland. The American Uri Caine and his klezmer band have long understood this, and—together with the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin under the baton of our Music Director James Gaffigan—they will make us inwardly weep while outwardly tapping our feet. Great emotions at the crossroads between musical worlds to mark the start of the new year. Just let yourself fall into the music, charging your batteries for the start of 2025—a year with bright prospects. Happy New Year!

Singing and moving together, meeting one another: In three playrooms, four artists from the last two festivals will guide the audience to collectively produce a lot of Schall and Rausch, sound and rapture.
The choice of playroom is up to you. Maybe go with Loulou Hameleers from the Dutch music theatre collective CLUB GEWALT, lead singer of the punk feminist band Herr Hamsterfleisch? Or with James Gaffigan, the Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin, who’s well known for his collaborative spirit? Or with Nhlanhla Mahlangu, composer, choreographer, and performer at Johannesburg’s Centre for the Less Good Idea, also a specialist in isicathamiya, a singing tradition of South Africa’s Zulu? Or maybe do all three in a row!
Theatre maker Daniel Cremer will set the scene, lead a warm-up, and get you in the mood for this participatory roller-coaster ride. But for everything else . . . that’s what you’ll be doing!

Richard Wagner 1813-1883
A Romantic Opera in three acts
Libretto by Richard Wagner inspired
by The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski , by Heinrich Heine
James Gaffigan conducts his second Wagner opera after an “intense” version of Tristan und Isolde that demonstrated his “passionate mastery of the score”. This production features a cast of seasoned Wagnerian voices, led by the young American bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee as the Dutchman, a role he is performing for the first time in Europe. His incarnations of Wotan, Donner, Amfortas and Hans Sachs in Leipzig, Munich, Frankfurt and the Bayreuth Festival testify to his meteoric Wagnerian career. Elisabet Strid is one of the most sought-after Sentas in opera houses around the world (she recently sang the role for 60 performances in Covent Garden). The rest of the cast includes bass Franz-Josef Selig (Daland) and tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac (Erik). Willy Decker, well-known for his outstanding productions of La traviata and Peter Grimes, sets the curse of the Dutchman in a simple but enormous stage design dominated by gigantic, practically empty rooms, with a masterly interplay of light and shadow that accentuates the psychological aspect of the drama.

To mark the start of spring, we’ll explore music in which we can hear nature’s awakening. Music Director James Gaffigan, along with Robin Poell and the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, will embark on a journey through the world of springtime. Not only can we hear the bees buzzing through the orchestra, we can also sing along, immerse ourselves in the sounds, and look forward to spring together.

With Don Giovanni, Mozart and Da Ponte successfully created a masterwork of the operatic canon. In this dramma giocoso or ‘lighthearted drama’, they achieved—through Mozart’s sophisticated psychological composition, spellbinding melodies, and brilliant instrumentation—an extraordinary study of human nature that, in Kirill Serebrennikov’s fearless hands, brings up compelling questions about sex, the power of seduction, the pursuit of individual freedom, and the right to defy societal norms.

In the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, there is a bittersweet note that people have been struggling to describe for centuries. Is it a sense of joy in the depths? Or is it a melancholy in the sweetness? Composed at the same time as The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 is a work that carries precisely that character, and which the Norwegian pianist Christian Ihle Hadland takes on with verve: rousing and dance-like, without a single humdrum moment. With just as much lightness as Mozart, we also have Elena Kats-Chernin’s Dance of the Paper Umbrellas to start the programme. And with Franz Schubert’s Fourth Symphony, its ‘Tragic’ sobriquet belies the dramatic, stirring journey that awaits the audience. This is preceded by Grażyna Bacewicz’s rapidfire Overture for Orchestra. It’s a real roller coaster of springtime emotions!

Sergej Rachmaninow (1873 ‒ 1943)
Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13
Sometimes the stars just don’t align. This was certainly the case with Rachmaninoff’s ill-fated First Symphony, the work of a twenty-two-year-old. Its premiere on 15th March 1897 was a complete failure, ending in fiasco. The orchestra was poorly-prepared, and the conductor – renowned composer Alexander Glazunov – was obviously drunk. This failure affected the young Rachmaninoff to such an extent that he was unable to compose at all for almost four years, eventually having to seek medical and psychotherapeutic help. Golden child Richard Strauss, on the other hand, had a much easier time of it. With his Serenade Op. 7 he aroused the interest of the great conductor Hans von Bülow, who premiered the seventeen-year-old’s work in 1882, later conducting it on concert tours. It is enchanting music, clearly modelled on the slow movements of Mozartʼs cheerful serenades: one genius acknowledging another.
Some are immensely lucky, others equally unlucky: how young composers can fare with their first works.
