Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 6
Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 6
For the Schall&Rausch festival, the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin is juxtaposing two masters of opulence—David Bowie and Anton Bruckner—in a unique setting. David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ album, recorded in 1977 at Berlin’s Hansa Studios, was a major milestone in his extraordinary body of work.
With his collaborator Brian Eno, he explored, among other things, Berlin and its denizens, such as with the instrumental piece ‘Neuköln’ (a misspelling of the Berlin district). Newly arranged for orchestra, Bowie’s album can now be heard in the place it belongs: the heart of Neukölln. Music Director James Gaffigan juxtaposes this with Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6, a work that could hardly be further away stylistically from ‘Heroes’, but taken together, they’ll electrify the Vollgutlager with their enthralling range and expansiveness.
