“The textures [in the Tchaikovsky] are lighter and sprinkled with arpeggios…Pomp has gone; the mood is poetic, as though we had dipped into Schumann’s piano concerto by mistake…Pianist and orchestra pounce on the [Prokofiev’s] pungent rhythms like hungry lions and stir burning energy and rage. This is Gerstein’s first concerto album and it’s definitely one you notice.”

James Gaffigan conducts his second Wagner opera after an “intense” version of Tristan und Isolde that demonstrated his “passionate mastery of the score”. This production features a cast of seasoned Wagnerian voices, led by the young American bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee as the Dutchman, a role he is performing for the first time in Europe. His incarnations of Wotan, Donner, Amfortas and Hans Sachs in Leipzig, Munich, Frankfurt and the Bayreuth Festival testify to his meteoric Wagnerian career. Elisabet Strid is one of the most sought-after Sentas in opera houses around the world (she recently sang the role for 60 performances in Covent Garden). The rest of the cast includes bass Franz-Josef Selig (Daland) and tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac (Erik). Willy Decker, well-known for his outstanding productions of La traviata and Peter Grimes, sets the curse of the Dutchman in a simple but enormous stage design dominated by gigantic, practically empty rooms, with a masterly interplay of light and shadow that accentuates the psychological aspect of the drama.

I had such a great experience debuting with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester @Elbphilharmonie! I had the additional surprise of having my wonderful colleague Anton Barakhovsky lead the program.
