Tchaikovsky is one of the favorite composers of the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana since its foundation and also of James Gaffigan, who this season, in addition to his commitment to The Lady of Spades at Les Arts, conducts the OCV at the Palau de la Música in Valencia and in Castellón, in the last work of the Russian composer, Symphony 6, ‘Pathetique’, premiered a few days before his death. It is the most beautiful expression of the composer’s personality and feelings, as evidenced, above all, by the final lamenting Adagio, perhaps a premonition of his own death. Wagner also expressed his most sincere feelings for Mechthild Wesendonck in the beautiful Lieder he composed from the poems she wrote. Dramatic and passionate pentagrams – which would later inspire some of the motifs of Tristan – to which the American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton lends her voice.
