“…[Gaffigan’s] opulent sound embodiment worked amazing well with Dresen’s dusty grey coal mine setting. Together they created a way to make Puccini’s seldom performed opera believable from start to finish and awakened a hope that we could be both hearing and seeing a return of La fanciulla del West more often at the Bayerischen Staatsoper.
James Gaffigan led the Bayerische Staatsorchester in a strikingly cinematic way, accompanying every transition with luscious colors creating an, one must almost say, orgasm of sound.”

Lovers in closets, leaps into the garden, nocturnal trysts: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has taken the text of his poet familiar Lorenzo Da Ponte and composed a masterpiece with all the ingredients of a perfect romantic comedy. With his breakneck tempo, multilayered emotionality, and playful esprit, Mozart draws us into the innermost hearts of his protagonists, revealing to us a wide-ranging palette of love in its many colours. The Marriage of Figaro, a trailblazer among musical comedies, shines in new and contemporary splendour with director Kirill Serebrennikov’s artful reading.

It has been an incredible four weeks in the US. I saw so many friends, returned to four great orchestras, worked on beautiful repertoire with wonderful soloists and artists, re-explored the cities, visited my children in LA, and had some amazing food.
